GRATITUDE.
Gratitude is a word that has made me think for a long, long time. I've always been a grateful person for many things, at least i thought so. My family, my friends, my strengths, and even my weaknesses. But sometimes, I'm not grateful enough for what I have right in front of me.
There are so many small things around us that we don't even realize we need every day, and I'm guilty of not being grateful enough for those small things I use every single day.
The computer that I'm using to make this right now, is a result of my parents' sacrifice. It's such a common tool that we use in the United States every single day. Every little thing that surrounds us in our daily lives can sometimes go over heads very easily.
for example....
Every little detail I have in my room, from a star wars poster on my wall, to the curtains on my windows, have a history of family and love behind it. The desk that i am writing this on right now, I built it with my dad, enjoying every screw we add in, as we make jokes and laugh with each other.
Making my desk, putting my curtain, placing the poster on the wall... Each one took about 30 minutes to two hours. Looking back at your entire life, it seems like such a small moment to be grateful for. But that laughter, that joy, that companionship of setting up all of these things in my room, were so much more than just 30 minutes of work.
It made me realize that Time is also a very precious commodity that we often take for granted. I could've wasted two precious hours of my life sleeping on a Saturday, or spend those two most humbling and beautiful hours making a meaningful impact. Every Saturday morning, I choose to spend two hours teaching students in Kenya online. This experience not only enriches their lives but also provides me with an incredible sense of fulfillment and purpose.
There's nothing more rewarding than the time spent watching the joyfulness in Juven's face.
His assignment was to create a 3D model of a wagon using TinkerCad, all by himself. He would share his progress with the rest of the group around him. This future Kenyan astronaut likes Star Wars just like me.
His school didn't have computers before, or even internet. The walls and the ceiling have metal sheets that in the U.S. would be deemed "unsafe."
Yet, he appreciates and is so grateful for every Saturday class.
While I am in my comfortable room that i described before, on the other side of the google meet, Juven has been present, overcoming floods, blackouts, and even civil unrest. His little happy smile always takes over the meeting, and he cries when he doesn't do good.
This.
This is what motivates me.
what humbles me,
what inspires me,
and what makes me
Grateful.
"Compassion, which i would define as unconditional love, is essential to a Jedi's life. So you might say, that we are encouraged to love."
