I envisioned the inception of an ECDE (Early Childhood Development and Education) center. The name "Jehovah Elyon" was chosen to symbolize the Almighty. It was a simple yet memorable name for the young children, inspired by the "The Highest God" concept mentioned in Genesis 14:18. This concept became our motto - "Aiming for the Highest."
Our ECDE journey began in 2003 and continued until 2013. We initiated the school in the second term, on May 5th, 2003, with just one child and one teacher.
By 2004, we had welcomed 30 children, forming ten playgroups, ten Preprimary 1, and ten Preprimary 2 classes, with the guidance of two teachers. We operated from a rented unfinished block house.
our story
... Lily Amayo"
From 2004 to 2007
The Lord was so good to us. He added more children to come and learn with us. We had children who could not pay the school fees, which were Kenyan shillings two hundred and fifty by then. Some could not pay at all. The children were eager to learn. When they left for other schools at pre-primary two because we did not have a primary section. When the Lord allowed us to see 2007, we hosted our first graduation for the children at that level during the third term. We hired gowns, and the children enjoyed themselves. We have held this graduation of our children to date.
During these years, the kids mainly participated in activities, like drama for preschool children, singing games-African, and choral verses. We also took them for educational tours to the Kisumu show, Museum, Impala Park Osienala, the airport, and the railway station every year.
Our school, Elyon, was registered in 2013 to retain ECDE to grade 1. We moved to the next class each year until we reached class eight. When the pioneers got to class 3, class 1 was changed to grade 1. In 2022, we hosted rise six-KEPSEA Assessment, and the five children moved to grade 7 in the neighboring schools. We hope to bring up Grade 7 in 2024.
This year 2023, our kids participated in a music festival, which they did well up to the lake region. Our ECDE did an Indian Oriental up to the county level, and they did marvelously too.
Elyon ECD is the inspiring story of a Kenyan school that defies the odds. Despite scarce resources, our dedicated teachers and resilient students keep the flame of education alive.
Facing financial challenges, we've leaned on small parent contributions. Some struggle to pay on time, affecting both teachers and students. We've had educators come and go due to payment uncertainties, and we've faced scrutiny from authorities. Our school's lifeline relies on parents, often struggling themselves due to the country's economic situation.
Our students are often from single-parent households, some are orphans, and many families struggle to support more than one child's education. We provide meals, but our kitchen utensils are worn, and we rely on community support for special events.
Uniforms and facilities remain a challenge. Our iron-sheet building is showing its age, and funds are tight for repairs. We lack space to accommodate all our students.
Despite these hardships, we're unwavering in our commitment to education. We seek your support, not as a sign of weakness but to create a better future. With your help, we can provide quality education and brighter prospects for these children.
Join us in transforming their lives and building a future full of possibilities. Thank you for being a part of this journey.
CHALLENGES
SPARKTECH
Picture a small rural school in Kenya, nestled amidst the beauty of nature, where the flame of education had flickered dimly. But then, a spark ignited. Enter SparkTech Tutoring, a beacon of hope, determined to illuminate the path of learning for a group of eager teenagers.
From humble beginnings, we embarked on this journey, bringing our expertise and passion to these young minds. As we shared our knowledge, a magical transformation began. With each lesson, the spark within these teenagers grew brighter, their thirst for knowledge expanding.
Partnering with SparkTech Tutoring brought about remarkable improvements. We now have the gift of two computers, internet access, and even clean water - invaluable resources we are deeply grateful for. The impact on our learners has been astounding. They've developed technology skills, effortlessly interacting with computers, gaining independence and confidence in their abilities. Even our dedicated teachers have found immense value. They now have easy access to the information required for teaching, a far cry from the previous challenges of having to visit the cyber café to download materials.
The introduction of technology hasn't just stopped at the basics. It has empowered our students to learn to draw using a computer, tinker with card-based activities, delve into design using software like Onshape, and even explore the fascinating world of coding. These skills open doors to a realm of possibilities, preparing our learners for the challenges of the digital age.
However, this progress hasn't come without its challenges. The limited number of computers has led to high demand, with many kids eager to harness the power of technology. It's a testament to the incredible impact of these resources that they've become such a vital part of our students' lives. The hunger for knowledge, sparked by these computers, is a challenge we're proud to face.
As we look ahead, we see a future that's brighter than ever before. The partnership between SparkTech Tutoring and our school is not just about numbers or equipment; it's about fostering a love for learning, embracing innovation, and transforming lives. Together, we're nurturing a generation of young minds who will go on to shape the world around them.
Join us on this inspiring journey, as we light the path to a brighter future, one lesson at a time. Together, we are nurturing the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and dreamers, and the impact will ripple far beyond the walls of this rural school. Through technology, dedication, and collaboration, we're turning dreams into reality, and the best is yet to come.
